*Sadly, Macklin’s went out of business last year. Thanks to Mack, the owner, and the staff for letting me hang out all day almost every day while I was funding in PA!
Last Saturday, here in Australia, I drove over to Ringwood East for a few deals at the opp shop (read: thrift store) and lunch at a bakery. For dessert I had a “mud cake” cupcake. It was good — it was chocolatey — but it wasn’t Macklin’s.
Some of you know how I feel about cupcakes. (I’m in love with them.) Others of you know how I’ve felt about York, Pennsylvania, my hometown. (Where are all the good coffee shops?) If you’re on my Facebook, you all know how I feel about Macklin’s Cafe: cupcakes & coffee. (No better coffeeshop in York!)
My first visit to Macklin’s a year ago left me with a sweet taste in my mouth (a chocolate chip mint cupcake, I think it was) but with no desire to return. To me, a coffeeshop is for good food and an atmosphere for writing, but at Macklin’s I found bright pinks and greens. Not my vibe.
When I returned to PA from Indiana this January, I remembered the cupcakes and decided I had to go back. They were so delicious I knew I would at least take something to go! (Or three somethings to go. Or four. Or more.) Then I walked in and discovered that Macklin’s was reborn.
Amazing cupcakes of stunning and tasty variety…yes.
Friendly owner & staff…yes.
How many cupcakes did I eat there in the one month I was home? You don’t want to know. I WILL tell you that I’ve tried the following flavors:
Cookies & Cream
(…and there are still more to choose from.)
Macklin’s goes beyond cupcakes. Although I never had their coffee (friends who’ve visited say choose Macklin’s over Starbuck’s any day), I visited the cafe with three different friends. One had their “English Toffee” and declared it delicious.
They also have a tasty lunch menu. Sandwiches from ham and cheese on ciabatta to grilled PB&J, salads with a variety of toppings to choose from, ice creams and soups. Ever had Panera’s broccoli cheddar soup? It’s popular sure, but let’s get real: you can taste the preservatives. Not so with Macklin’s! You can taste the real cheddar flavor. Upon my inquiry the owner told me that everything is home made.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Macklin’s, where have you been all my life? With your coconut cupcakes that were good enough to eat three days in a row? With your small business charm and your blueberry italian sodas with cream?
Happily the answer is…not far at all! Macklin’s is the Queensgate Shopping Center and is just off of Springwood Road.
If you live in York or are passing through, check out Macklin’s for lunch & a cupcake. Or you could follow the advice of one who’s been in your shoes. Just buy a dozen to go and don’t worry about trying them all — you’ll be back anyway.
*Note: When I return to the US, I’d love to visit the cafe for some more pictures & maybe a more “official” interview with the owner…so keep your eyes open for future cupcake news!
